The Illinois Defense of Marriage Initiative

The Illinois general assembly legalized civil unions, but the people of Illinois never got a chance to vote on the matter.  Lets change that.

The Illinois Defense of Marriage Initiative seeks to put an advisory referendum on the 2012 ballot, requiring 500,000 signatures of registered voters by April 23, 2012. In every other state (31 so far) where this question is put before the voters, the voters have said yes to traditional marriage: one man and one woman.

Here's how you can help:

  1. Download the 2 page petition instructions, petition for your election jurisdiction, and Top 10 Reasons flyer.
  2. Get friends, family, church members, co-workers who are registered Illinois voters to sign the petition.
  3. Notarize your petition and mail to the address at the lower left corner of the petition.
  4. Recruit 10 people to commit to getting 10 signatures and follow up with them. Start a chain of petition circulators.
  5. Donate to the Illinois Defense of Marriage Initiative.
  6. Spread the word through email lists and social media like Facebook and Twitter.
  7. Volunteer for the Illinois Defense of Marriage Initiative. Email defendmarriageil@gmail.com, call 630-462-7882, or write to P.O. Box 407, Westmont, IL 60559.

Traditional marriage, one man and one woman, is the backbone of our society.

Illinoisans deserve a voice and a vote on this fundamental institution.
