  • The 3 major companies have contributed more than $6 million to State politicians, and $835k to federal candidates.

 

  • Government spending on corrections soared since 1997 by 72%, up to $74 billion in 2007.

 

  • The private prison industry has raked in tremendous profits.  In 2010, the 2 largest prison companies (Corrections Corporation of American (CCA) and GEO Group) made $2.9 billion in revenue.

 

  • According to the Justice Policy Institute, the private industry has actively sought to create the market conditions (i.e. more prisoners) necessary to expand its business.

 

 

Does this concern you?

 

Consider the number of Americans locked up in prison for non-violent crimes.  Most of which are drug related.

 

How can the government, including politicians turn a fundamentally social institution like prisons into a "for profit" business?  This is highly immoral, and only benefits the corporations and politicians.
