How Could $8.4 Million Have Helped To Educate VVSD Students?

VVSD students deserve to benefit from the hard earned tax money paid into this district.

Why Don’t VVSD Teachers Pay Their Share of Pension Contributions? highlighted the fact that VVSD taxpayers have funded the teacher portion of pension contributions for atleast the last five years – an estimated $8.4 million in 2010, alone.

Exactly how much money has been diverted from the classroom over the past five years to fund the teacher portion of pension contributions? I am waiting for a response to this and several other questions from the district.

I emailed all elected board members, Assistant Superintendent for Administrative Services, Gary Grizaffi, and copied Superintendent James Mitchem the following three questions on October 21, 2011:

  • Has VVSD self-reported to the Illinois State Board of Education for atleast the last 5 years that VVSD taxpayers have "picked up", paid for, the 9.4% legally mandated teacher portion of their pension contribution?

  • How much have VVSD taxpayers paid in each of the past 5 years to fund the teacher 9.4% legally mandated pension contribution? The Illinois Policy Institute study estimated that $8.4 million was "picked up" by district taxpayers in 2010.

  • In light of the most recent budget deficit of $7.2 million, teacher layoffs, program cutbacks, and the possibility of outsourcing bus service reported in the Bolingbrook local media, will the board also consider cost savings associated with having teachers pay their own legally mandated pension contribution during the upcoming teacher contract negotiations?

VVSD board members will negotiate the next teacher contract this year. If you believe teachers should pay their legally mandated portion of pension contributions so that precious tax dollars needed in the classroom can remain in the classroom, contact your elected VVSD board members:

  1. Steven Quigley, Board President quigleys@vvsd.org
  2. Richard “Rick” Gougis III, Board Vice President  gougisr@vvsd.org
  3. Ronnie Bull, Board Secretary bullr@vvsd.org
  4. Jim Curran curranj@vvsd.org
  5. Mrs. Elizabeth (Liz) Campbell campbellel@vvsd.org
  6. Chrystal Hansen HANSENC@vvsd.org
  7. Leo Venegas venegasl@vvsd.org

The Illinois Policy Institute estimated that in 2010, just one year, $8.4 million was diverted to pay the teacher portion of the pension contribution. These precious tax dollars are needed in the classroom and should remain there.

Taxpayers are losing homes, jobs and dealing with cutbacks at work. Taxpayers are already paying their fair share of 9.4% at the state level, and 0.58% at the district level. It is only reasonable that teacher’s pay their share, 9.4% of their salary, towards their pension contribution.

After millions in cuts, the district still posted a $7.2 million deficit in the latest budget. It’s long overdue for the district to get serious about rolling back added benefits like paying the teacher’s portion of pension contributions.

It’s important that taxpayers and parents contact the elected board members because the teacher’s union, AFT Local 604 COPE II, spoke loud and clear when they bankrolled the Friends of Valley View candidates in the November 2010 elections. The teacher’s union contributions, $9,000, accounted for 90% of the Friends of Valley View campaign contributions leading up to the election:

Most of the current board members had not yet been elected when the current contract was negotiated. So it is very important to contact the current board members. They need to know that:

VVSD students deserve to benefit from the hard earned tax money paid into this district. How else do you think $8.4 million could have been spent in 2010 to help educate VVSD students?
